Hailing from Cyprus’s divided capital Nicosia, this recently born ensemble – led by Antonis Antoniou founder of the esteemed Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke – is the start of a new adventure in Eastern Mediterranean psychedelia. Buzz’ Ayaz’s arresting sound is a wild mixture of fuzzy synth textures, dubby electronics, 70s psych organ, growling bass clarinet, tribal beats and microtonal Anatolian melodies.
An Eastern Mediterranean folk element runs deep in the veins of each band member, and they collectively use that to build a 21st-century sonic universe that has a strong local identity and tang. The result is a contemporary reflection of place; of the politics, geography and fluctuations of light and shadow found in the turbulent soul of Nicosia, an urban melting pot of Greek, Turkish and other cultures.
The members of the band come from both sides of the city’s Greek/Turkish divide. Their joining together is a deliberate attempt to create a music that gives voice to the whole city. A music that echoes above its concrete walls.
Buzz' Ayaz's Antonis Antoniou tells us this about the themes of their debut single: »Zali (Dizziness) is about not conforming to the rules set by any conventional structures. It’s about taking a different direction from the ordinary, about the urge of exploring new experiences and falling in love with them whatever the cost. It’s about daydreaming, about hovering tenderly in our imagination, about letting our senses get drunk and dizzy on the purity of life.«
